It’s been a busy few months for the Torfaen Constituency Labour Party Women’s Forum. In the run up to Christmas the forum organised a collection of essential toiletries for Torfaen Women’s Aid. When fleeing domestic abuse women and children are often moved at short notice and with only the clothes they are standing in, basic toiletries are always very much needed and very much welcomed. The toiletries will be distributed to women and children in Refuges and when they move into their new homes. Forum members came out in force to collect hundreds of essential items from family, colleagues and fellow party members. Thank you to all who contributed.
Our February meeting saw some lively discussion on women’s issues. Forum members also took part in a dementia friends session. The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition. Torfaen Councillor Mandy Owen who is a dementia friends champion kindly agreed to lead a session which saw forum members receive their dementia friends badges. Torfaen is committed to becoming a dementia friendly community and to become a dementia friend only takes an hour. If you or your organisation would be interested in becoming a Dementia Friend or for more information visit: www.dementiafriends.org.uk
With the National Assembly for Wales elections approaching in May, the women’s forum invited Torfaen AM, Lynne Neagle, who is standing for re election along to March’s meeting to discuss her priorities for the next assembly term. A lively and informative discussion was had and it provided a great opportunity for women members to discuss what matters to them most with Lynne. Following the meeting forum members joined Lynne on the campaign trail.
The women’s forum have also got together socially for some fun and have recently participated in the Mayors charity quiz and Lynne Neagle’s fish, chip and quiz supper campaign launch.
