Nick Thomas-Symonds has assisted the launch of My Perfect Send Off at a Parliamentary event with other MPs and Peers. The campaign is led by SunLife and the Dying Matters coalition and is designed to raise public awareness about the importance of talking about dying, death and bereavement and for planning ahead. They believe that helping people to talk more openly about these issues will involve a fundamental change in society in which dying, death and bereavement will be seen and accepted as a natural part of everyone’s life cycle.
Their Big Conversation campaign is designed to inspire people to speak candidly about their end of life wishes with their loved ones. According to SunLife research, only 1% of people know all of their loved ones’ funeral wishes. Furthermore a third of those organising a funeral had no idea whether the deceased would have wanted to be buried or cremated.
The campaign is designed to encourage awareness as Dying Matters believe that the lack of openness has affected the quality and range of support and care services available to patients and families. It has also affected people’s ability to think about planning ahead for the type of care they want when dying and how to prepare loved ones for bereavement, especially children who are facing loss.
The Torfaen MP said, “It is important that we become more comfortable speaking about issues surrounding death and bereavement. I made a pledge at the event to raise awareness because I believe it is vitally important that we can come together and speak about our end of life plans before it is too late.”
Claire Henry, Chief Executive of the Dying Matters Coalition added: “Talking about dying doesn’t make it happen and it gives us peace of mind to know we’ve made and shared our plans, and it makes life easier for our loved ones to know they are giving us the perfect send-off we want. We’re delighted to be working with SunLife on their new send-off tool, and hope that people find it a really useful resource.”
