Promoted by Mark Ward-Jones on behalf of the Torfaen Constituency Labour Party at 27 Brunel Road, Fairwater, Cwmbran, Torfaen NP44 4QT.
Nick Thomas-Symonds embarked on a trek around Big Pit today with Torfaen ‘Take a Stroll’ to raise awareness of the benefits of walking.
The group is co-ordinated by Lynne Mattravers and has been going strong for eleven years. It is part of Let’s Walk Cymru covers all of Wales and is run by the Ramblers Cymru, who have 80 years’ experience in organising walks and opening up the countryside to everyone.
The programme is funded through a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government. It is one of their responses to Creating an Active Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government’s national campaign for a healthier and happier Wales. Levels of inactivity in Wales are higher than they are in England with only 30% of the population achieving the recommended levels of weekly activity.
The goal is to make Wales healthier by getting more people out enjoying the beautiful countryside and becoming fitter and happier through regular walking. An inactive lifestyle can have serious effects on peoples’ health and can be as deadly as smoking.
Mr Thomas-Symonds said, ‘This is a fantastic way for people in my constituency to meet new people while becoming healthier. The benefits of a brisk walk are incredible and it is brilliant that Lynne and her team are organising these walks across Torfaen.’
