Promoted by Mark Ward-Jones on behalf of the Torfaen Constituency Labour Party at 27 Brunel Road, Fairwater, Cwmbran, Torfaen NP44 4QT.
Torfaen MP, Nick Thomas-Symonds, was today named as the Shadow Solicitor General. Speaking on the announcement, Nick issued the following statement:
“I am pleased to be Labour’s Shadow Solicitor-General.
In taking the job, I hope to draw on my experience as a barrister before entering Parliament.
As Shadow Solicitor-General, I will be exposing the Tories’ failure on access to justice, with their appalling record on legal aid cuts and tribunal fees, and the number of people who are left without representation and have to represent themselves.
The Tories cannot be allowed to get away with their attacks on our justice system. When the country’s most senior judge, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, wrote earlier this year that “our system of justice has become unaffordable to most” that should give us all pause for thought.
I also intend to make the case for greater equality of access and diversity in the legal professions, and look forward to speaking to both the Law Society and the Bar Council about pushing forward with their work on these issues.
I now intend to get on with the job and hold the Tories to account in Parliament.”
